Swedish songwriter shy martin (aka Sara Hjellström) is probably too modest to admit it, but she has all the ingredients needed to be an international mega-star. For starters, she has a dulcet voice that can put a listener into a reverie – like on her new single “Late Night Thoughts”. It’s the rhythmically sophisticated and inviting title track to her debut album that will arrive May 19.
The amazing thing is that martin isn’t a Scandinavian recluse. She’s written hit songs for artists like The Chainsmokers, Ellie Goulding and Jess Glyne.
There’s no reason for this amazing talent to feel shy. Her songs always connect emotionally – and they start with unadorned simplicity before getting sonically richer mid-track. shy’s new album will be a trampoline that sends her career soaring.
Commenting on the album-making process, shy notes: “There weren’t any rules. If something suited the song and I could deliver emotion, then that was enough. I wanted the album to sound raw, like I had recorded it in my bedroom. When I wrote the songs, it felt like a safe space, like we weren’t even working.”
On the title track, shy martin says: “I don’t even know what genre it is and I don’t know what inspired it. It felt like a song that just happened. It felt different from other things I’ve written and that’s what made it interesting to me.”
