Ships Have Sailed explore multiple visions of “Invisible Ink”

Sometimes declarations of love feel like they’re written in invisible ink – fragile and impermanent. That’s the hook in the new single and mini-EP Invisible Ink from California pop duo Ships Have Sailed. It’s a beautiful ballad that unexpectedly soars in a brilliant B section.

Ships Have Sailed consists of songwriter/singer/guitarist Will Carpenter and drummer Art Andranikyan. Carpenter co-wrote “Invisible Ink” with Anita Majumdar and Bill O’Hanlon (who’s also a prolific author).

Recounting the song’s creation, Carpenter says: “Somehow, there can be as much beauty as pain in a relationship, and this song, created by (at the time) three strangers in a virtual room shines the light on that beauty.”

What started out as a single song soon blossomed into a three-part EP showcasing the original track, a stripped-down version and a dreamy remix.

“Although my collaborators and I had just met, we somehow found a place of extreme vulnerability to dig into that day,” adds Carpenter. “It was a magical experience in many ways. Although we loved the first version I produced of the song, we felt there were more layers to be uncovered. After all, there are many ways to experience, express or process any sequence of emotions, so we felt it would be interesting to explore that musically, which led us to creating the three versions you can hear on this mini-EP.”
