Giungla is the musical project of Milan-based songwriter Ema Drei, who has released a string of singles and an EP in the last few years. She’s building up to the release of her second EP, and today has delivered the first taste of what’s to come with “Walk On The Ceiling”. The inspiration for the song comes from late nights in bed, sending texts to someone special. She says:
“I like to think of the phone light as a candle to be protected and given to someone special. The perspective is upside down, as if those who stay awake at night to write were in another reality; it is about the beauty of looking for a bit of mystery and magic even in a protected and domestic environment, trying to be braver than you are during the day.”
“Walk On The Ceiling” was recorded in London with Andrew Savours, who is best known for his work with titans like My Bloody Valentine and The Kills, but on Giungla’s new track the guitar is on the periphery, adding an electrified air to this silky pop banger. The singer is in the spotlight, her poised and flowing voice working perfectly in tandem with the slick sounds, as she invites us into her safe space. We feel how she’s tickled by the potential of a deep and meaningful connection with someone; it’s both keeping her up at night and making her feel like she’s upside down like Spider Man. The magic of “Walk On The Ceiling” is that it transmits all of Giungla’s crackling excitement without ever overdoing the stylish production, ensuring we remain in this intimate atmosphere with her.
