Brooklyn sound artists and musicians Mari Maurice Rubio (aka More Eaze) and Lynn Avery (aka Iceblink) are set to release their self-titled debut collaborative album as Pink Must at the end of the month. After sharing “Morphe Sun” and “Himbo“, the part are back with “Karaoke of the Bends”, the only track on the album where Avery sings (the only release ever to feature her vocals, actually). It’s a gorgeous and subtle orchestral stomp that finds them focusing on their synergistic song-craft and tightening the reins on their wild creativities — not that they’ve lost any of that wondrous magic here; it’s just more attentive to its surroundings.
“Lynn kept teasing this song as we were working on the record,” explains Rubio, “and I was dying to work on it. I came up with a crazy overlapping string arrangement that’s constantly sliding up and down simultaneously, and added pedal steel and a single line of vocals/text that I feel like kind of amplifies the longing for closeness that Lynn’s lyrics portray. It’s all about that moment where you’re singing a song you’ve heard/sung a million times but then realize that it’s different because you’re now singing it for someone. I love this song, and I feel like Lynn captured a very specific sense of longing.”
“It’s that kind of corny ‘I know I’ll see you soon, but I want to see you tonight’ feeling,” says Avery, “and doing karaoke of songs from The Bends by Radiohead.” She adds: “Singing your own songs still kind of feels like doing karaoke.”
The song comes with an accompanying video directed by Avery and Alice Hall.
