Inspired by the plainspoken, candid vocabulary of SELF ESTEEM, Lilly Allen and Kate Nash, Norfolk-songwriter Kitty Perrin debuts with the bittersweet wistful break-up ballad “The Escapist”. It’s a gentle song that reflects back on a relationship that ended badly; in the aftermath, we often dig deep into certain coping mechanisms and narratives to stave off our own culpability.
Perrin says of the song: “When I was processing a recent break-up, it eventually dawned on me that I was doing my best to avoid taking responsibility for my role in it. I realized that I’d been glad my ex had ended things so badly because it meant that I was the victim. ‘The Escapist’ is about that desire I had to feel blameless at the end of that relationship, and our ability to invent false histories for our own peace of mind.”
This reflective, conversational style of songwriting comes naturally to Perrin; she works as a broadcaster and host for BBC Radio Norfolk. One of the shows she presents is The Social, which talks about modern issues of the youth. Obviously, telling a story that’s empathetic to different sides has transferred to her music as well, so we hope to hear more material from Perrin in the near future.
