Molly Burman puts a sex pest in their place on the ultra cool “Debt”

London’s Molly Burman may only be a few singles into her career, but she’s already proven herself to be cuttingly candid and devilishly entertaining as a songwriter, especially when it comes to matters of potential romance. As we build up to the release of her debut EP, Fool Me With Flattery, in August, she’s shared another new single in this vain called “Debt”, saying:

“Debt was inspired by a night out I had, a night that I’m sure many can relate to. I was just out to have a good time and dance and a guy was very insistent that he buy me a drink, this then made him feel some sort of entitlement to my body and he continued to harass me throughout the night. I wanted to make a fun, groovy song that people could dance to, but also wanted to get out my frustration. No one owes you their body just because you bought them a drink or were nice to them, we aren’t here to make you feel good about yourself, we’re just trying to go out and have a boogie, so leave us the hell alone!”

There’s not much to add to the above quote, as “Debt” pretty much lays out the facts of the story as detailed above, but does so in a coy, characterful and catchy way. Over an infectious rhythm guitar, Burman details the unwanted encounter at the bar with a notably unimpressed tone in her voice, before tossing that stress aside in the carefree chorus “just because you bought me a drink / doesn’t mean I owe you thing.” For the second verse, she notices him watching her angrily across the dancefloor, and in return she doesn’t hold back on the put downs: “don’t be salty be salty that we can’t dance / clearly you’re insecure / you’re wearing a face like a slapped arse over a drink I didn’t ask for,” drawling that last line just to emphasise how bored she is with this kind of childish manliness. Just to put the cherry on top, she sums up the whole situation with a perfectly poised statement: “I am not your confidence boost.” Damn right.
