LA newcomers All Things Blue deliver a dreampunk kiss-off with “Chad”

All Things Blue are a new LA-based band centred around lyricist/vocalist India Coombs (Blue) and collaborator Jon Joseph, who are due to release their debut album this year. They’ve shared the first glimpse of it in the form of “Chad”, a bright and cheeky anti-love song, about which India says:

“See-saws are fun until you’re riding an emotional see-saw; when you want someone that doesn’t want you, but makes sure to keep you around. Sometimes you only realise in retrospect; that person was just a Chad. Also during the whole vocal take I was holding Jon’s week old baby boy which is why I laugh at the end cause he fell asleep.”

The instrumental of “Chad” has the sunshine-and-laughter sheen of childhood fun, but as India’s personality starts to take up the sonic space it quickly becomes clear that this isn’t a dreamy affair. She jumps from unimpressed and gritty in the verses to falsetto impatience in the chorus, dragging us with her through the unwanted emotional turmoil. All Things Blue maintain the whimsical, shoegaze-light sound swirling all around her, but rather than drawing her closer, it’s almost as if she’s waving goodbye, drifting away with a last blown-kiss “fuck you”.
