Norwegian duo Date of Birth — Birgitta Alida Hole and Pablo Tellez — have released their debut single, “Sunshine Girl”, a vivid and hypnotic romp through acres of ’60s pop psychedelia. Drawing inspiration from the Beach Boys and bands like Sagittarius and The Association while also curating bits from more current colleagues like Alvvays and The Lemon Twigs. Hole and Tellez craft a unique amalgam of familiar sounds, offering a peek into the creative undercurrents that feed their collective musical impulses. The strings on “Sunshine Girl” ascend in looping circles, recalling the gorgeous arrangements of ABBA or the Bee Gees. Hole’s voice is a gauzy wonder, our north star as we drift down opaque rivulets of mercurial melody.
“‘Sunshine Girl’ is a song born out of close encounters with loved ones and personal experiences with illness and feeling on the outside,” explains the band. “The song was written six years ago after a profound meeting with a close friend who experienced a life crisis. We spent an evening together, talking and listening — deeply moved by what she shared and the pain she carried. The very next day, the song emerged as a spontaneous flow of longing, unrest, and hope…“
They continue: “Over the years, the lyrics have been revised several times, but we ultimately chose to return to the original version — because that’s where the genuine emotion lay.“
