You’ll be immediately enthralled by Connor Pledger’s new single “Goodbye Who I Was.” We’re so accustomed to hearing superficial pop ditties that it’s really refreshing to hear an indie-folk song that’s actually about something.
Pledger’s voice is distinctive because of its warmth and range. He’s a much better singer than many of the bards of yore like John Prine and Dylan.
Atlanta-born Pledger relocated to L.A. in 2015 and quickly became one half of the pop duo Mob Rich. As a solo act, he draws inspiration from artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Noah Kahan and Hozier, yet there’s a rootsy quality in his music that’s genuinely original.
After years of listening to overproduced glitch-pop, I’m convinced that the “less is more” approach will benefit Pledger’s career. After all, Bob Dylan didn’t need a super-producer like Jack Antonoff to create minimalist masterpieces like “Tangled Up in Blue.” Honesty and authenticity will take Pledger a long, long way.
