CMAT turns a bitter break up into irreverent pop gold on “I Don’t Really Care For You”

Irish singer-songwriter CMAT is coming into 2021 full of justified confidence after a breakthrough 2020 – although she’s still living with her parents. Regardless, it hasn’t toned down her outspoken personality, which gets another airing in today’s new offering “I Don’t Really Care For You”, which takes us right into the final days of a crumbling relationship. She says:

It’s about realising you were ultimately the bigger dickhead in a relationship. I was thinking about how superiority always insists upon itself. Good people will always think they were doing the right thing in the moment, even if their actions are terrible. I try really hard to be a good person, but I still end up being a big bully sometimes. If you ever find yourself saying something along the lines of, ‘I would love him IF…’ or ‘I would stay with you IF…’ then… you’re probably being a dickhead.”

Having that self-awareness in hand is a vital ingredient of CMAT’s “I Don’t Really Care For You”. She wields it like a weapon as she sings brightly over sprightly pop rock with cinematic piano flourishes that disguise the cutting nature of her words. She has also said that “Musically, I went to my producer Oli with the vague concept of, ‘What if this song was ABBA doing a spaghetti western soundtrack?’” and that idea germinates into a gorgeously addictive chorus that could easily find its way on to daytime radio A-lists. Then once there, it can worm its way into people’s minds and make them question “am I really happy with my partner?” That’s the power of music this sweet and sour at once.
