We sometimes forget that music can heal. American new age artist Cheryl B. Engelhardt is nominated for a Grammy in February for the album According To The Moon โ a collaboration with Australian artist GEM. One of the albumโs highlights is โGlimmerโ, a restorative track with a haunting melody. The song features โcross-hemisphericโ recording techniques that help balance the often estranged left and right hemispheres of our brains.
“Creating โAccording to the Moonโ helped me stay connected to the way music can support emotional healing,โ says Engelhardt.โSome of the pieces move at a tempo that matches a heart rate approaching resting. Research has shown that music can influence heart rates, and Gem and I leaned into that as part of the process of shaping calm and regulation into the sound.โ
She adds:โThe cross-hemispheric recording process was less about science than it was simply about the reality of our collaboration. Gem and I were passing ideas across time zones, waiting for each otherโs additions, and letting the music unfold in layers. That rhythm of sending, receiving, and trusting became part of the emotional texture of the album. My hope is that listeners feel some of that grounding when they hear it.โ
