As 2020 wraps up and we head towards the holiday season, lots of artists are putting out Christmas songs, either covers or originals. We’ve been particularly drawn to the anti-Christmas songs that have emerged, most notably U.S. Girls’ “Santa Stay Home”, and now the power punk team up of Charly Bliss and PUP on “It’s Christmas and I Fucking Miss You”. Charly Bliss singer Eva Hendricks says:
“Our managers have been trying to get us to write a Christmas song for years and we’ve never followed through, but we decided that enlisting our friends in PUP would at least make it fun… We never imagined we’d be so proud and absolutely thrilled as we are by the results. We tried to write a song that reflects the absolute insanity of this year and the fact that everyone in the world is stuck missing someone this holiday season and probably feeling a similar combination of emo, angsty and vulnerable!!!!”
Stefan Babcock of PUP adds: “I was so excited when Charly Bliss asked me to write a Christmas song with them. I don’t know if I’d be able to write a Christmas song under normal circumstances, but since Christmas is shit this year, seemed like it was right in my wheelhouse! Plus Charly Bliss are an amazing band and amazing people, so it was a no-brainer. If we’re judging it alongside other Christmas songs, I think we smashed it.”
Revolving around the theme that we’re all going to be having a quite different holiday season this year – probably staying away from the people we love – “It’s Christmas and I Fucking Miss You” is a cathartic pop rocker, replete with singalong chorus and jingle bells. Hendricks doesn’t hold back on the miserableness, singing about crying to Elf and remembering the fun of years past. Babcock is more blunt, simply stating: “this whole year’s been dogshit anyway.”
But then they all come together in the chorus, and even though it doubles down on the crappiness of Christmas 2020, it’s an anthem for doomed holiday spirit – and will actually probably make you feel better.
