Does it really get more fun than CHAI? In recent memory, there are scarcely any bands as purely, and truly, effervescent to their very core as the Japanese pop punk favorites – although they’re moving more into their own brand of funky pop as recent single “Donuts Mind If I Do” suggests.
Thankfully, in our second year of this seemingly unending pandemic, we’ve been given something pure to look forward to: CHAI have shared plans for their third LP, WINK. It’s due out May 21st via Sub Pop.
To tide us over, they’ve shared the project’s lead single “Action”, rambunctious and truly serious all at once, written as a reaction to watching the Black Lives Matter protests from their home country. Although, the weight of the topic doesn’t mean that CHAI can’t still be their buoyant and colorful selves, making “Action” a brilliant and unique call to arms.
Bassist and vocalist Yukki explains, “Seeing how the world came together during the protests really moved me. I wanted to dedicate that song to the year of action.” She means it quite literally: the song is titled “ACTION”, after all.
Sharing their thoughts as one, the band offers, “The world as we know it has changed, but even with that, it’s still a world where nothing really changes. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there more ACTION rooted in happiness? Be the change that you want to see!… I’m going to be the pioneer in seeing the world I want to see, meeting the people I want to meet! We start off by expressing the fun in ACTION with this music video♡ Why don’t you join us?! It’s that type of song♡.”

CHAI’s new album WINK is out on May 21 via Sub Pop (pre-order). You can find the band on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
