TEN BEST SONGS OF THE DECADE (SO FAR)
by Larry McClain
“Thoroughfare” – Ethel Cain
The best long-form folk/Americana song since Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue” and Neil Young’s “Cortez The Killer” in the 1970s. American songwriters have long been mesmerized by the allure of “the road” and the lessons to be learned there. This may be the best one ever.
“If Now Was Then” – Maggie Rogers
Perhaps the finest “regret” song of the decade, powerfully conveyed.
“Butterfly Net” – Caroline Polachek
A masterpiece by an artist who may one day be considered the finest this decade had to offer.
“Personal Space” – talker
Features a haunting chorus melody that sounds mystical and almost Middle Eastern and a lyric that lays bare an anguished inner life. Every note and drumbeat in this song is perfect, right up to the final two chords that sound like they were played by The Who’s Pete Townshend.
“The 1” – Taylor Swift
Why is it so hard for music reviewers to admit that Ms. Swift is one of the finest songwriters of her generation? This song abounds with intimacy and insight.
“Internet Age” – Courtney Farren
This song perfectly captures the anxiety of the digital age. It’s something we all vaguely sense, but Courtney makes it tangible and relatable.
“Smile” – Wolf Alice
Ellie Rowsell is insanely versatile, going from crystalline soprano to songs like this one. With its hypnotic Led Zep-esque riff, “Smile” demonstrates that Rowsell is the Debbie Harry of the 2020s.
“A World Away (Beer Drunk Glory Days)” – Fiona Grey ft. kate the dreamer
This song gradually goes from ethereal to visceral, performed by two of the best vocalists in all of pop today.
“The Art Of Getting Through” – Imogen Clark
An amazing anthem about resilience, not just in a career but in life itself.
“Growing Up Is Painful” – Leni Black
This poignant, melodically brilliant song is right up there with the best of Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell.
