A month ago we were knocked out by “Showers”, the recent single from 19-year-old Amber Strawbridge aka Bored At My Grandmas House. She has an EP called Sometimes I Forget You’re Human Too coming out in February, and this week has shared a second single called “Skin”. She says:
“Skin is about the ability to give yourself to someone physically but not emotionally. It’s about the ending of relationships on your end, not because of the other person, or anything specific – but just because of your own inability to emotionally express yourself and be vulnerable with another human.”
Once again we had to double check out notes about Strawbridge’s age, because both the above quote and the song “Skin” itself delve headlong into weighty personal topics that resonate with everyone. Far from the simple ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ excuse, Strawbridge delivers a heartbreaking story about the slowly deteriorating bonds between her and her partner, where the love she has for this person and the confusion in her own mind face off in a tangle of emotions. “Skin” is a slick and gorgeous dreampop song, with gossamer guitar threading together Strawbridge’s bold honesty. “My skin was your skin / and I knew you knew that,” she reveals in the vulnerably anthemic chorus, then pushes herself a step further, “but I’d give it all up again / if I could just be honest.” A song that captivates with its glistening sheen, then sucker punches with its quiet emotional heft, “Skin” is another clear reason why we should be excited about Bored At My Grandmas House.
