Blur are haunted on “St. Charles Square”

Blur have released a second single from their forthcoming album The Ballad of Darren, following up lead single “The Narcissist” with “St. Charles Square”.

Damon Albarn says: “St. Charles Square is a place where the ghosts of monsters can be found.”

This is borne out in the song, which finds Albarn immediately announcing “I fucked up, I’m not the first to do it.” Wailing and gauzy guitars add to the creeping sensation of loss and regret, building to the chorus where he announces “there’s something down here, and it’s living under the floorboards” and projects a rasping near-scream. Despite the heavy nature of the lyrics, “St. Charles Square” sounds like Blur having the most fun they’ve had in a long time.

Blur’s new album The Ballad Of Darren will be out on July 21 through Parlophone (pre-order/save). You can find them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
