Last year I compared L.A. indie artist Beck Pete to Lady Gaga – and it’s still a very accurate comp. Her new single “Bite Down” reminds me of songs where Lady G’s voice is expressive and warm, but make no mistake: Beck can belt just as powerfully as the Oscar-winning actress/singer. Very few pop singers in the world could match the power, range and sizzle that Beck Pete brought to last year’s “Softie”.
The new single is the perfect teaser for BP’s upcoming album Scared Of Everything Part 2. The artist says, “In a world where strength is encouraged, and expression of feeling has been painted as the opposite of strength, I’m over here arguing that one cannot exist without the other.”
Beck got several songs placed in movies and TV just before the crippling writers/actors strike. She has a song in the Apple TV series Shelter and one in the upcoming film Singing In My Sleep.
It’s easy to see why Beck Pete is a favorite at some of L.A.’s most prestigious venues, including The Echo and The Troubadour. Fifty years ago, Carole King vaulted to fame at the latter – and Beck Pete combines Carole’s songwriting skills with an even bigger, better voice. I think 2023 is gonna be her year.
