If you love bluesy music in the style of Tedeschi Trucks Band, Delaney & Bonnie and Amy Winehouse, don’t miss the new single “Empty Room” from Nashville duo The FBR. The group’s name is a nod to Leonard Cohen’s “Famous Blue Raincoat”, but in my mind it stands for “Frickin’ Brilliant Roots” music.
The FBR coalesced when Malarie McConaha and Tim Hunter met at an open mic night. Tim is a literary scholar who no doubt read a lot of Flannery O’Connor’s work because the duo’s previous single is a Southern Gothic saga called “Before I Drown”. The group is finalizing a debut album called Ghost that arrives in January.
The song “Empty Room” took shape when Malarie and Tim had to spend some unexpected time apart. Says Malarie: “It was a monumental moment for me, being able to be vulnerable enough to express my struggles and for both of us to be able to communicate it through a song.”
