Samantha Margret makes the smart choice on “Night Jogging”

LA artist Samantha Margretโ€™s new single โ€œNight Joggingโ€ asserts that whatโ€™s reasonably safe and routine for a man at night is seldom that way for a woman. Sheโ€™s absolutely right about that, even though jogging through LAโ€™s Skid Row at midnight could be problematic for just about anyone.

Recalling the songโ€™s origin, Margret says: โ€œI was driving in Los Angeles one night after a show, so it was maybe 10 orย 11 pmย and I passed this man, just jogging along the side of the road. It seemed like it would have been beautiful with all the streetlights and the cool, night air. Then I realized that if it were me jogging on this street at this hour, I would have been afraid. It made me think about all the situations where one person’s pleasant evening outing is another person’s anxiety-fueled odyssey. The song is a depiction both lyrically and musically of the ways that fear taints otherwise lovely activities and spaces.โ€

Samanthaโ€™s career got its first big boost with 2020โ€™s โ€œFeminist GFโ€, followed by last yearโ€™s haunting โ€œRAGEโ€. The latter features a Stanley Kubrick-caliber video thatโ€™s impossible to watch just once.

Samanthaโ€™s music has depth and power that few artists can match. I urge you to add all her great songs to your playlistโ€ฆ but donโ€™t jog to them after sunset.
