LA artist Samantha Margretโs new single โNight Joggingโ asserts that whatโs reasonably safe and routine for a man at night is seldom that way for a woman. Sheโs absolutely right about that, even though jogging through LAโs Skid Row at midnight could be problematic for just about anyone.
Recalling the songโs origin, Margret says: โI was driving in Los Angeles one night after a show, so it was maybe 10 orย 11 pmย and I passed this man, just jogging along the side of the road. It seemed like it would have been beautiful with all the streetlights and the cool, night air. Then I realized that if it were me jogging on this street at this hour, I would have been afraid. It made me think about all the situations where one person’s pleasant evening outing is another person’s anxiety-fueled odyssey. The song is a depiction both lyrically and musically of the ways that fear taints otherwise lovely activities and spaces.โ
Samanthaโs career got its first big boost with 2020โs โFeminist GFโ, followed by last yearโs haunting โRAGEโ. The latter features a Stanley Kubrick-caliber video thatโs impossible to watch just once.
Samanthaโs music has depth and power that few artists can match. I urge you to add all her great songs to your playlistโฆ but donโt jog to them after sunset.
