Molly Burman digs into a bracing, gorgeous lullaby with “Pretty Girl”

If you’ve yet to hear about Molly Burman, you’re sure to start seeing her name soon. The North London singer-songwriter released her debut EP last summer, and is already back for more.

There’s stark, yet serene, simplicity to her music, but that’s a deceptive outer layer. Beneath her every word and every move is a deep reservoir of emotion, and her latest, “Pretty Girl” is no exception. Driven by emotive, gentle piano and her serene, beyond expressive voice, the song slowly unfurls into a tapestry of of disconnection.

Speaking on the song’s creation, Burman shares, “I wrote ‘pretty girl’ a few years ago desperately trying to become what I thought was ‘perfect’. I wanted to be the girls that I heard being spoken about in songs and books, so I would dress myself in things that made me feel uncomfortable and would spend hours looking in the mirror imagining my body to look a different way, but that just made me feel further and further away from the ‘pretty girls’.

For anyone who’s ever felt uncomfortable in their own skin, or less attractive than those around them (read: uh, all of us?), it’s a song that immediately connects, slicing gently into our deepest insecurities. It’s also, ultimately, however, one of letting go of those very standards and embracing your own beauty. For a song that clocks in at under three minutes, it covers a lot of ground, and offers quite a bit of healing, for those open to it.
