New York-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Evan Wright recently announced that he’ll be releasing his debut album Sound From Out The Window in August through Solitaire Recordings. Today he shares a new single from the album called “IDM” – which does not stand for ‘Intelligent Dance Music’, but in fact ‘I Don’t Mind’. Wright says:
“It took me a while to write the lyrics for this song but there was one day I was taking the train that was so delayed. And while everyone was losing it I decided I was going to not let it bother me and finish the lyrics. The message of the song was influenced by what was going on around me. I was just not trying to let the things I had no control over dictate my emotions.”
If you didn’t know beforehand that Wright writes and records everything himself, you’d certainly know it on listening to “IDM”, as it presents an idiosyncratic array of instrumentation, produced in such a wobbly way, that it could only have come from a singular mind. Underpinned by a tinny drum line and a repeating marimba melody (which could be a synth), “IDM” bobbles along with pure wide-eyed innocence. Wright opens the song, “look around, see what you find”, and this seems to be his philosophy in building up the song, as he gradually layers in piano, electronic tones, treated guitar, harp, and many other tactile sounds that make us feel like a child walking through the world for the first time. This plays into the themes of the song; Wright seems to be saying that if you stop worrying about where you’re going and how quickly you can get there, you might just start relaxing and enjoying the world around you, discovering new wonders in the every day. On “IDM”, Wright captures those endless minor miracles in pure glimmering sound.
