Weyes Blood sets off in search of genuine love and connection on “Grapevine”

Weyes Blood‘s new album And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow is undeniably one of the most anticipated albums of the tail end of 2022, and following excellent lead single “It’s Not Just Me, It’s Everybody” we now have a second taste in the form of “Grapevine”. Weyes Blood aka Natalie Mering says:

“Technology is harvesting our attention away from each other. We all have a ‘Grapevine’ entwined around our past with unresolved wounds and pain. Being in love doesn’t necessarily mean being together. Why else do so many love songs yearn for a connection?”

“Grapevine” is named after a section of California’s Interstate 5 highway, and it certainly makes for a great road trip song. While listening to Mering sing in her unbelievably rich and dulcet voice over simple acoustic strums and subtly gorgeous synth and string augmentations, you can imagine her speeding away in a convertible, her hair billowing in the wind, a look of determination on her face. She’s going to find that special someone, perhaps everyone, to try and tell them that we’re headed down a destructive path of separation, that we need to stop looking into the eyes of our phones and return our gazes to each other. If anyone can persuade the world to do it, it’s Mering and “Grapevine”.
