Prog-rockers The Mars Volta have already recorded two new albums, to follow-up last year’s The Bedlam in Goliath, according to guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López in an interview with Spinner. The albums won’t be released for a while though, since “vocals need to be recorded and additional tweaking may be necessary” but Rodríguez-López will be keeping busy nonetheless.
He recently released a solo album, entitled Old Money, with Los Angeles-based hip-hop label Stones Throw Records, which is run by Rodríguez-López’s friend Peanut Butter Wolf. Old Money deals with “the entrenched political power structure of the United States” and is “more obvious” politically than Rodríguez-López’s work with The Mars Volta. The album was released in November 2008 but wasn’t widely available until mid-January. On January 26 he also released two moresolo albums, through Willie Anderson Recordings, entitled Megaritual and Despair.
