Terence Nance is best known currently for his work in film and TV, having directed the Sundance fave An Oversimplification of Her Beauty and created the HBO show Random Acts of Flyness, but he’s now showing off the musical side of his creativity, for which he works under the name Terence Etc.. The single “Infinince or Infinity?” dropped earlier this year and now he reveals his debut album V O R T E X will be out August 19 on Brainfeeder.
He says: “V O R T E X is a sonic tool that I made so that I can play it for myself and balance my energy between masculine and feminine; creative and destructive; domination and submission; right and left; sun and moon; day and night: opposing energies generally. he album intends to use sound, melody, song, incantation, etc. to rebalance the self and each other throughout the constant circular movement of life.”
He’s also shared the 10-minute single “In Contemplation of Clair’s Scent”, which is a true tour-de-force. It starts with an instrumental jazz intro, then shifts into rumba-like R&B, an uplifting soul section, then moves into a warped, cartoonish rap section before concluding with a harp-led finale where he bears his soul. It’s quite a ride. There’s a sub-three-minute edit, but why would you want to listen to that?!
