Snail Mail excavates the horror of unrequited love in the gory song and video “Valentine”, from her new album

Lindsey Jordan aka Snail Mail has announced the follow-up to her beloved debut album Lush; it’s called Valentine and comes out on November 5 through Matador. On the album, she says:

“I wanted to take as much time as possible with this record to make sure I was happy with every detail before unleashing it unto y’all. Referring to the process as the deepest level of catharsis and therapy I have ever experienced would be a huge understatement. Valentine is my child!”

Today she shares the album’s opener and title track, which is a visceral way to introduce what is bound to be a stomach churning blast of a record. “Valentine” begins with a soft focus synths setting the scene, Jordan offering her partner “let’s go be alone, where no one can see us, honey.” All seems lovely and peaceful, despite the “parasitic cameras” around, Jordan’s voice ripe with adoration. Her trademark guitar starts to dot around the edges, as she confesses “I think I was made for you”, then comes charging in on the explosive chorus “why’d you wanna erase me!? / darling valentine / you always know where to find me / when you change your mind.”

The second verse returns to placidity, but this time Jordan is alone and in tears, still totally hung up on her lost “Valentine”. The song gallops back and forth through these vicissitudes of mood, a stomach plunging up and down of anger and hopelessness, all supported by Jordan’s buzzing guitar and pristine pop-rock arrangements. The 22-year-old might have matured in these last few years, but her feelings are still shot directly from the gut – and are all the more potent for it.

The video for “Valentine” is immediately iconic, sitting somewhere between Game of Thrones and Tim and Eric – it will no doubt spawn countless GIFs. Jordan says about it:

“It was so rewarding concocting this video alongside the brilliant Josh Coll! Watching a few perverse images in my head metamorphose into this gorgeous storyline and eventually into a tangible visual was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. We connected over a mutual interest in the intersection between terror and devastating beauty. But also Tim and Eric and watered down ginger ale, which I had to drink a shocking amount of in those drink-bombing scenes.”
