London band Pynch made a splash earlier this year with their single “Somebody Else”, which turned 202 into an electrifying ramble in ways that caught the imagination of a wider audience than they’d expected. The band’s Spencer Enock wanted to capitalise on the bump by putting out another song, which turned out to be an old song. He explains:
“I actually wrote this song back in December and recorded a really rough demo of it but then I just sort of forgot about it. After the surprising success of Somebody Else, which was the first track I’d ever properly produced and mixed, I wanted to start recording the next single straight away and thought this was an apt choice as the world only seems to be getting stranger by the day.”
He also says that the new track “Tries to depict the neoliberal hellscape in which we find ourselves in a playful but stark way.”
While “Somebody Else” looked at the horror of 2020 from a personal perspective, Pynch go for a more wide-angle view on “The World’s Gone Crazy (For Love)”, opening their arms and writing their version of a classic pop song for everyone – although, of course, it’s completely undermining all of the loveliness it presents. There’s an air of Jarvis Cocker about the way Spencer sings about “all the plans that we’ve made and all the money that we’ve saved”, sounding genuine on the surface, but with a certain air that suggests he knows it’s all a preposterous dream. Nevertheless, Pynch ensure that “The World’s Gone Crazy (For Love)” remains buoyant and catchy with a propulsive beat and plenty of instrumental ingenuity, meaning it actually sounds uplifting – if you don’t think too hard about it.
Pynch’s “Somebody Else” and “The Whole World’s Gone Crazy (For Love)” will be released on a 10″ single on January 29 – you can pre-order it on their Bandcamp.
