Even removed from the generations that 2020 feels like, the wait for new material from Nilüfer Yanya since her 2019 debut, Miss Universe, has felt longer than it should. Her presence is simply that magnetic, that vital.
Well, the wait is over. She’s back with a new single, “Crash”, along with its vibrant video. She’s also announced the EP that will house it, the perfectly titled Feeling Lucky?, which will arrive in December.
The song is as bold as you’d expect from Yanya, dancing nimbly between the confrontational and euphoric, wielding a pretty serious riff betwixt its delightful pop implosion. “If you ask me one more question,” she keeps threatening, often letting the thought trail off, with more than enough power present in the implication of her words.
Speaking on her approaching body of work, Yanya reflects, “One of the songs had the theme of luck in it as a concept but then I realised they all do. That got me thinking about luck in general; good and bad. Things out of our control and things in control of us, how often we put acts and happenings down to the fortune of good luck or bad luck when things exceed our expectations or don’t go according to plan.“
Look out for Feeling Lucky? come December 11 via Chess Club. You can find her on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
