New R.E.M.: Christmas song and snippets from Collapse Into Now

R.E.M. have previously announced that they will be releasing their new album Collapse Into Now in early 2011. We can’t yet offer you a preview track from that album but the band have given us a couple of other aural gifts in the spirit of the season.

Firstly, in time honoured R.E.M. tradition the band have released a christmas song. This year it is a cover of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” originally performed by Darlene Love in 1963. We say it’s R.E.M. but it lacks a certain Michael Stipe, but Mike Mills is on hand to cover the vocals. On the kit, however, is R.E.M.’s original drummer Bill Berry. The Minus 5’s Scott McCaughey also contributes to the track.

And in perhaps more exciting news we’ve got a sneak preview of Collapse Into Now. The track is entitled “IHT>U>EDIYTW (Dubmix),” which is a mashup of early mixes of instrumental segments from three of the new tracks, presumably “It Happened Today,” “Uberlin,” and “Every Day Is Yours to Win.” Check it out below.
