Low often get labled as noise rock, which is accurate in that their sound can often push sonic levels, but it is too easy of a way to sum up an often complex and intriguing band. So the announcement that their new album is called C’mon may be a call to action for music listeners to all try a little harder and engage a little better. It also might signify an effort on their part to meet people somewhere in the middle, as it is their shortest album title yet. Or, maybe we should actually listen to it before we start drawing conclusions.
The short of the album is that it was recorded in a church in Duluth, MN and mixed in Los Angeles. The long of it is that the band seeks more intimacy with their sound. As singer Alan Spearhawk notes, “with the last couple of records, we were grappling with something outside of ourselves. This one feels more like, ‘Well, forget that. I’m looking in your eyes right now, and we need to figure out how to get through the next moment, together, as human beings.'”
A more accessible Low could be, like, the best thing ever. Let’s all hope together, but for now, we will just have to wait a couple months to find out for sure. The album will be out on April 12, 2011 on Sub Pop.
