Ivor Novello-winning pop-soul artist MYSIE has a new EP called Undertones coming out in May. Today she’s shared the five-track set’s closing cut, “In My Mind”, which she says is about “the prospect of lust”.
That lust is not necessarily a healthy urge though; “I’ve been staring at the ceiling trying to break through to the clouds,” she admits, her agitation at this inadvisable attraction keeping her up at night. Nonetheless, “In My Mind” gives into the sensual prospect, at least in her imagination, as it coasts on low-key bluesy R&B that slips and oozes like silk. MYSIE’s voice matches, her natural tones and ear-catching cadence perfectly attuned to the complexities of this predicament; and when she sings the coiling bridge “Every move I make feels so wrong / Maybe you and I don’t belong,” you can feel her body trying to override her mind. That desire creeps up inside her throughout “In My Mind”, the sexual tension growing and coming to a head in the quietly combusting finale.
