My Octopus Mind deliver tense and terrifying art-rock on “Hindenburg”

Two weeks ago, Bristol trio My Octopus Mind dropped off “Wandering Eye”, a psych-rock romp taken from their upcoming album Faulty At Source, which is due later this month. Today they return with another preview of their upcoming album, “Hindenburg” – and as the title suggests, it’s quite a fraught affair, especially in comparison to the romp of their previous outing.

My Octopus Mind set the tone for the new track by sampling the radio broadcast coverage of the Hindenburg Disaster, the fear and confusion in the announcer’s voice bleeding into the bruised and brooding atmosphere. The trio are patient to build from there, with Middle Eastern strings echoing into the blackness, before guitar gently washes in along with Liam O’Connell’s wining, practically disembodied voice. There’s a tension immediately, but My Octopus Mind aren’t here to give the quick payoff, they want to milk it for all it’s worth, with a slow and steady build of unseen forces, like a storm gradually gaining momentum. When the thunder does eventually strike, it’s as cacophonous as hoped, the trio playing in tight unison to pressurise the force of their sound, while O’Connell goes into a babbling insanity. What more could you want from a song called “Hindenburg” by a band called My Octopus Mind?
