Motel Breakfast sound like champagne brunch on “Wonder Year”, from their new album

Listening to the new single from Motel Breakfast is like staggering down to the morning eats at Red Roof Inn and finding champagne, caviar and eggs benedict. The Chicago indie band’s new single “Wonder Year” is the first taste of their upcoming album I Promise I’m Having Fun, arriving April 5.

“Wonder Year” feels like a Zach Bryan song that stands in stark contrast to most of the guano on mainstream radio at the moment.

Here’s what hit me when I listened to the album preview: these dudes are highly skilled musicians, and they unselfishly let each other become the focal point on certain songs. For example, “MB (As In Modern Baseball)” has a great guitar riff and Springsteen-esque vocal. The keyboard takes center stage in “The Call” – and “So Long” is a showcase for bass and drums.

The lads in Motel Breakfast also have a special knack for interesting song titles. How can you resist listening to tunes like “See You Soon, Meet You There” and “Suite: Learning To Live”?

For now, listen to “Wonder Year” below, or find it on the streaming services.
