Archy Marshall is growing up and along with that, appears to distancing himself from the twisted guitar compositions that brought him his relative prominence as Zoo Kid. When he indulged in atmospheric beats on his first release under his King Krule moniker, it seemed a puzzling–if welcome–departure from his initial output. Well, it would appear that Marshall is headed further down that path if “Octopus” is any indication. Leaving any pretension about pop songwriting behind, Marshall layers gobs of reverb onto the track and leaves the earth behind. With no proper catchy melody to ground the track, this is certainly one more to soak in than sing along to, but it’s an interesting direction nonetheless.
“Octopus” will be available as a B-side to the “Rock Bottom” 7″ out September 25th on Rinse.
