The new track from rising hip hop star J. Cole, “Killers,” is a brilliant, dark telling of a life of a young man pressured into becoming a killer. Like any good hip hop track of a darker theme it has a simple beat which allows the lyrics to shine through and Cole seizes this opportunity, fleshing out a character that we come to believe in and relate to in just over four minutes.
The song is reportedly a song made to promote an art show called “The Glorification of the Gangster” by Alex Haldi. The show is a study of the human obsession with organized crime, and Cole’s track fits perfectly into that theme. The song is much too good to only be used for this art show promotion though, so let’s hope it gets a wider release too.
