To borrow a favourite phrase from a Silent Shout review, Demdike Stare have made a career pretty much set and intent on “scaring the abject shit out of you.” That looks set to change – albeit temporarily – with a new release they’ve got out in the world now (via Modern Love Records), inventively titled Testpressing #001. The A-side, “Collide,” is an 8 minute behemoth that doesn’t so much frighten you as it does confuse, beguile, and perplex you. With heavy jungle drums rhythms and high frequency synth noises all over, Demdike Stare might not be directly trying to scare you, but they’re still creating pieces that are more foreboding than most other acts could attempt to pull off.
