With still two months to go until the release of new album Ultra Mono, British punks IDLES have shared a third single from it. Following “Mr. Motivator” and “Grounds”, today’s new one is called “A Hymn”. Singer Joe Talbot says:
“‘A Hymn’ is a hymn that rejoices in the sinister flesh-eating virus of the pedestrian. It sings the tune of normal’s teeth sinking into your neck as you sleep stood up with your eyes open. Amen.”
Slow and stately, reminiscent of last album’s emotional core “June”, “A Prayer” gives plenty of space for Talbot’s characterful voice to emote and wallow. There are still flashes of the usual madness in the corners of his eyes on “A Hymn”, but at the centre is his big red heart: “I wanna be loved / everybody does.”
The video for “A Hymn”, directed by Ryan Gander, features the band and their parents driving around town on a fairly normal grey day.
