London-based South African band Honeymoan have announced that they’ll be releasing their debut album Sorry Like You Mean It on September 29. They’ve also shared the title track, saying:
“Sorry Like You Mean it was the last song we wrote for the album and it’s loosely based on a relationship I had with someone who was struggling with their mental health and addiction. The song explores the trials of loving someone who seems unwilling to change and has become so attached to suffering that it is almost pleasurable for them. The narrative touches on the eventual realisation that without their desire to change nothing will change, and then taking responsibility for one’s own choices in the face of such a realisation.”
That arc from affection to frustration is nicely drawn out in “Sorry Like You Mean It” as Honeymoan spend the tense-but-tender verses trying to understand their depressed partner, only to then lose patience and let frustration blast through the song in the chorus. They turn the tables, taking no more bullshit, challenging the partner to make a fist of things – “you never try, you never know”, as they succinctly put it. We’ve probably all experienced energy vampires like this in our lives, now Honeymoan have provided us the perfect soundtrack to drown out that negativity from our lives and keep on driving our own paths.
