girlpuppy explores the lingering sadness and tragic beauty of a failed relationship on “Windows”

girlpuppy — the alias of Atlanta musician Becca Harvey — recently signed with Captured Tracks, releasing her first single, “Champ“, for the prolific indie imprint. Now, she’s shared another track called “Windows”. Produced by Alex Farrar, the track finds Harvey exploring the lingering sadness and regret that appears after the dissolution of an intense relationship. The song sounds like a lost indie gem from the early ’90s, the kind of song you might have discovered on Matador or Emperor Jones. Slinky guitars roam and dissolve into subatomic particles while the drums wander by and gently twinkling piano notes waft in from the nearest window. If you close your eyes, you could almost imagine the early days of music television, finding girlpuppy in multiple episodes of 120 Minutes. There’s a tender weightlessness to the track, even if the main underlying feeling is one of acute emotional disentanglement.

My friend Tom (who plays bass and piano on the track) describes ‘Windows’ as ‘the most girlpuppy song he’s ever heard.’“, says Harvey. “I’m in love with this song instrumentally because it reminds me of Yo La Tengo, who I was listening to so much of while making this single. ‘Windows’ is about the sadness of a breakup and how no matter how hard you try, you still find things that remind you of your past partner and you know they’re going through the same thing.

The track comes with a video directed by Trent Wayne (Sinai Vessel, MJ Lenderman).
