Fiona Grey watches a life implode on “Another Casualty”

Most pop songs donโ€™t employ sumptuous strings, but there are two this month that are superb: the Barbra Streisand/Hozier duet of โ€œThe First Time Ever I Saw Your Faceโ€ and the new single from LA artist Fiona Grey entitled โ€œAnother Casualtyโ€.

In addition to being one of todayโ€™s most accomplished singers, Greyโ€™s songwriting is likewise stellar. This song features one of the best lines of the year: โ€œIโ€™m codependent if I stay, a co-defendant if I go.โ€ Yet itโ€™s not a conventional love song. Itโ€™s a lament youโ€™ll never forget โ€“ one that great singers are destined to cover in the coming years. (I could hear Lewis Capaldi or Tom Waits covering this, in fact.)

โ€œโ€˜Another Casualtyโ€™ is about feeling like youโ€™ve lost control of your own life โ€” like youโ€™re just a passenger in your own story,โ€ says Grey. โ€œItโ€™s not really a breakup song; itโ€™s more about the heartbreak of watching someone you love fall apart and drag you down with them. It’s been one of the harder songs for me to release.โ€

Greyโ€™s album Adult Tantrums is due in July, and sheโ€™s already previewed that LP with โ€œA World Awayโ€, an ethereal duet with kate the dreamer. Another teaser for the album is โ€œCall Me Daisyโ€, a club banger that chronicles how Fiona started going to queer clubs as a safe sanctuary after a sexual assault.

Fiona Grey is Americaโ€™s Kate Bush of the turbulent 2020s. In an era of TikTok-fueled pop fluff, Greyโ€™s music is enduringly beautiful.
