Erika de Casier offers serenely frantic pop perfection with “Lucky”, announces new album

Having collaborated rather extensively with fledgling K-pop superstars NewJeans on the supreme pop victory of Get Up, Erika de Casier is riding higher than she’s ever been. Since the properly titled Essentials in 2019, she’s deserved to be a sensation, with keen musical instincts, even smoother still songwriting, and yet sharper pop savvy.

Having announced her third proper studio album, Still (arriving 21 February via 4AD), she’s only continued to perfect her “what if Aaliyah was still with us” vision, drawing once more from UK Bass and Downtempo, as well as sliding more heavily into the Liquid Drum and Bass she aided NewJeans in exploring last year.

To mark the occasion, she’s shared a video for the album’s lead single, “Lucky”. For Still, she’s also brought in other voices, ranging from appearances by the likes of Blood Orange and Shygirl, as well as several musicians who add live drums, synths, guitar, bass and more. It’s a distinctly collaborative effort, evolving from the consciously isolated nature of her past efforts.

As with de Casier’s best work, “Lucky” is somehow both nostalgic, timeless, and distinctly “now”. It’s jittery and tranquil at once, its frantic drum and bass elements offset by gentle, tranquil keys, all sewn together by de Casier’s irresistible vocals.

Check it out below, and look out for Still come February 21st via 4AD (pre-order/save).
