daena scores a victory over “Intrusive Thoughts”

Nashville artist daena’s new single “Intrusive Thoughts” has the melodic catchiness of Zolita and Chappell Roan as the singer infuses the song with the late 90s/early 2000s rock vibe of Joan Osborne and Liz Phair.

Some intrusive thoughts can be dark and disturbing, but daena’s are more lighthearted and playful, such as “lying on my yoga mat, intrusive thoughts: why doesn’t my body bend like that?”

Commenting on the song’s creation, daena says, “I started singing the weirdest melody to myself as I was making breakfast and staring at my dying plant one morning, I just started making myself laugh about the ridiculousness of not being able to read a book I wanted to read, or keep a plant alive. And so I basically wrote the bones of the first verse and the hook melody in a few minutes that morning. On a bigger scale, the song was born out of a frustration that I thought would be relatable for a lot of people. My brain struggles with day-to-day tasks, and it seemed so ironic to me that I was even failing at the ‘self care’ I was told would make things better. My co-writer Molly Bowers was down to chase this idea with me, and lean into the weirdness of the song structure, too. She brought so many great touches to this song!”

Although daena is a rocker at heart, she’s also building a buzz in Nashville with her frequent acoustic sets at the legendary Bluebird Café. Her new song is a welcome intrusion that may become your late-summer obsession.
