Cassandra Jenkins finds tranquility amidst the daily grind on “Only One”, announces new album

Cassandra Jenkins will follow up her breakthrough 2021 album An Overview On Phenomenal Nature with a new record called My Light, My Destroyer, arriving on 12 July through Dead Oceans. She has also shared the lead single “Only One”, revealing:

“It’s about a Groundhog Day effect, finding yourself in the same situation over and over again, not knowing how to get out of that loop—and in some sense, an unwillingness to break a cycle because you’re blinded by your circumstances.”

“Only One” reintroduces us to the new-age indie stylings of An Overview with smooth sax-laden synth sounds belying the opening frustration: “punch the clock in the face”. Nevertheless, as Jenkins traverses the daily grind, suffering through bodily pain and unhelpful formulas, she finds solace in a love – or perhaps begrudging love of her life, despite its shortcomings. “You’re the only one I’ve ever loved / The only one that I know how to love” she admits in the divine hook, the aches fading away in the face of this all-encompassing passion.
