After the noisy dream punk of “Reading Glasses” Euroboy’s Doortje Hiddema (Real Derek, Rats on Rafts) and Alicia Breton Ferrer (The Sweet Release Of Death, Neighbours Burning Neighbours) offer another glimpse of their collaborative LP Sacrificial Chanting Mood. “Bright” is a more free-form type of track, an exchange of self-care mantras between two hard-wired hermits.
Sentences such as “You don’t owe anyone anything” and “Your future is bright when you’re alone” are repeated with mesmeric conviction, as a primal trap beat and apocalyptic guitarscapes paint a desolate scenery. Though “Bright” can be interpreted as wry or sardonic, its ghostly character somehow feels joyous, two connected artists telling each other the virtues of retreat, of not having to live up to expectations. “The future is bright when I stay inside forever.” Amen to that.
Alicia Breton Ferrer and Euroboy will perform at Rotterdam’s Motel Mozaïque and Tilburg’s Roadburn Festival next weekend.
