In an interview for Spin.com, Black Lips’ guitarist, Cole Alexander, gave some hints on what to expect for the band’s upcoming album, which is supposed to be released in January or February of this year. With Mark Ronson as the producer for the band’s sixth studio album, the singer-guitarist had this to say about the highly anticipated record, “This album is going to be more commercial. We want to reach a lot more people. But we’re still keeping it real.”
How a band can produce something “more commercial” than a song used in an cellphone ad on T.V., I don’t know, but I’m not complaining; Black Lips albums are usually something to look forward to, regardless of the band becoming more mainstream. In the interview, Alexander goes on to give a few new track titles away including “You Keep On Running” (based on his book called Black Confederates and Afro Yankees in Civil War Virginia), “So Long to Carolina” and “Dumpster Diving” (which apparently both have a strong country sound to them). He also reveals that as well as revamping their sound and hooking up with Mark Ronson, the band has also picked up a few new instruments for the album, one of which includes a human skull, and that he would like to collaborate with Diplo.
Known for their unique modernized garage-y sound, it is hard to believe that Black Lips have been working to change so much in the production of this new album.
