Mae Deline is breathtaking on “Hate That I Hate You”

LA artist Mae Delineโ€™s debut album Whole Again is a 14-song delight, and her song โ€œHate That I Hate Youโ€ is arguably the most wistful and beautiful breakup song since George Harrisonโ€™s โ€œAll Things Must Passโ€.

โ€œโ€˜Hate That I Hate Youโ€™ is about the closure I never got,โ€ says Deline. โ€œI had to piece together the breakup on my own, deciding what was real and what wasnโ€™t. In the end, I realized I could hold both hate and love at the same time. The song is a reflection of that processโ€”accepting that resolution may never come, but finding forgiveness and peace within myself anyway. It was part of the journey to becoming โ€˜whole againโ€™ after being so broken.โ€

Another standout from Whole Again is the hypnotic country ballad โ€œSheโ€™s The Enemyโ€. The streaming market for country music is about as wide open as itโ€™s ever been, with newcomers like Dasha shaking things up. โ€œSheโ€™s The Enemyโ€ sounds every bit as authentic as Miranda Lambert (or even Emmylou Harris from yesteryear).

It should also be noted that Maeโ€™s visual flair is right up there with the two Davids (Byrne and Bowie). Thatโ€™s not surprising because she attended Cal Arts, the alma mater of film director Tim Burton.
