Windy City post-punkers Dehd are prepping their third full length Blues Skies this May, but before that they’ve given us another breezy preview with the sticky surf rocker “Stars.” Guitarist on co-singer Jason Balla says: “Stars” follows the previous jangle-popping summer cut “Bad Love” and starts out in similar territory with a jaunty rocking intro courtesy of co-lead singer Jasson Balla.
Three-quarters through though Dehd slow it down, with Balla explaining in a press release “When I get too overwhelmed, and I feel like my heart’s gonna break from all the sadness in this world, I go for a walk. The familiar streets of home pull me back to Earth.”
“Stars” dubiously feels like that post-chaos comedown, combing the land for some semblance of peace. It’s not as fun as “Bad Love” but it does have some Strokes-ian integrity with Balla swaying his melodies back and forth during the wind down. Emily Kempf adds her two cents to the doo-wopper explaining it’s about “reaching past the boundaries of understanding our personal comfort.” You’ll be able to reach that space with the trio this spring while they tour in support of Blue Skies, but before that check out the video for Stars” to get the full effect.
