Alex Lahey is back in a typically exciting and electrify manner with her new single “Spike The Punch.” Coinciding with the announcement that Lahey has now signed to Liberation Records, the Melbourne-based songwriter’s new track is an infectious and instantly likeable slice of power pop/rock. Of the track, Lahey says:
“Spike the Punch’ is a song about the fun that comes with self-sabotage and reckless abandon. It’s big, it’s loud, it’s fun, it’s its own beast. There are some super sinister tones in there rubbing up against really bright anime style guitar harmonies (guitarmonies, anyone?..) and shouted choruses. Spike feels like a raucous bookend to navigating these cruelly unpredictable times. Touch wood.“
Lahey’s description isn’t wrong: “Spike The Punch” has a bright and colourful tone to it which wouldn’t be out of place soundtracking an animated feature (which isn’t surprising consider Lahey wrote and recorded the theme song to the hit animated movie The Mitchells vs The Machines). The track might not hit on any new territory, but it’s no less enjoyable for this fact. The guitars are brisk and opalescent, the drums a propulsive energy driving the song along, and of course Lahey herself at the centre of it all, wishing the surrounding crew of people to leave her and another alone. “Spike the punch and get everyone sent home / So in the end it’s you and me dancing all alone,” she wishes. With a track like this though, she’s only be filling floors instead of emptying them.
