The name may imply otherwise, but Virginia Beach singer-songwriter Shaolinn is far from one of the Wu-Tang Killa Bees. Indeed, the name is in fact a tribute to her mom more than any pledge of deep fandom, and beyond perhaps the likes of Method Man and Mary J. Blige’s soulful link up on “I’ll Be There for You/You’re All I Need to Get By”, that’s just about where the similarities stop.
Instead, she’s spinning a yarn entirely her own, telling her own tales. Growing up something of an outcast and routinely bullied, the still-young artist took on baggage that has proven more than fruitful for her songwriting. At just 20 years old she’s delivering songs with more emotion and poise than many of her older peers.
None of this is to declare her morose. Rather, music has been a vessel for healing and perspective, and she hopes to offer her listeners the same. That begins with her newest single, “Heavy Heart”, which wistfully explores her past, all while looking forward to the future with determination. About the song, she says:
“The song is about having the pressure on your shoulders and heart to the point where you carry those past feelings and experiences into future situations. A lot of time that can result in being insecure in relationships, ruining friendships, and sometimes even result in family members not getting along. So the song is about insecurities and problems that I have within myself caused by these experiences.”
