UK duo Febueder have been releasing music for a few years, but had something of a breakthrough with their 2020 album Tomalin Has Etched In. They’re capitalising on that momentum by sharing a new single called “May San”, with Samuel Keysell saying:
“The track is about stopping the act of taking on people’s pains and worries and making them your own. A reminder to recognise beauty and optimism for the future. Like the May sun signaling an approaching summer, brighter things are ahead.”
“May Sun” marks a departure for Febueder in that it’s Keysell who takes lead vocals, whereas their past releases have found his musical partner Kieran Godfrey on lead. Keysell’s voice is less overtly powerful, which handily plays into the song’s composition and themes, as the words are quieter, humbler, and slightly obscured by the various tones and textures, only popping out into full resplendence occasionally – kind of like the titular “May Sun”. With less focus on the vocal, Febueder have created one of their most sonically playful songs, layering in many unexpected instruments into a loving aural patchwork, suggesting positivity in a friendly, approachable manner.
