San Diego-based artist Joseph Flores aka TEMPOREX had an unlikely smash hit with his 2017 mini album Care, which he created in his mid-teens, and has seen him rack up tens of millions of plays on Spotify. He’s released some singles since then, but it seems he’s gearing up to release an album this summer called Bowling. The details haven’t been revealed yet but today he’s shared the song “Delayed”.
Taking inspiration from his long-distance relationship with his girlfriend, which saw them having to use the unreliable California train service up and down the coast, “Delayed” is a snapshot of budding love at its most simple and infectious. It finds TEMPOREX packing snacks for the journey, waltzing with his beloved, and just letting time slip away blissfully until they have to part again. This is set to slick modern funk – all self-produced by TEMPOREX in his bedroom – that has shades of Prince in its natural groove and confidence, before Paul Cherry drops in to deliver some glistening guitar and elevate “Delayed” another step.
The video for “Delayed” gives us further insight into TEMPOREX’s sensibilities, as he created it all himself. He says:
“The music video was shot in quarantine in my room. I used this new AI technology to rotoscope myself and Paul Cherry into these wonky surrealist 3D environments that I built out in Blender (a free and open source 3D program). I was inspired by these 90s point and click PC games that were created to promote new music from artists such as Prince, David Bowie, and Devo (maybe more). The art direction of this video is reminiscent of films from Tim Burton, episodes of Pee-wee’s Playhouse, and video games I used to play as a kid. It’s a pretty good representation of how I genuinely dance to my own songs in my room while I’m working on them or listening back to the mixes.”
